Gratitude Is Meant to Be Expressed
Why saying “thank you” matters even more when we take the time to write it down

Think about how many times you say “thank you” in an ordinary week.
Someone holds the door open.
“Thank you.”
A coworker helps you with something.
“Thank you.”
A friend picks up the phone when you need to talk.
“Thank you.”
A neighbor does you a favor.
“Thank you.”
We say those two words so often that sometimes we barely think about them.
And yet, behind some of those simple moments is something much greater.
Someone gave us their time.
Someone noticed a need.
Someone encouraged us.
Someone showed up.
Someone made our day a little easier.
Someone made our life a little better.
The question is not whether we feel grateful.
Most of us do.
The question is:
Do the people we appreciate actually know how much we appreciate them?
There is a difference between feeling gratitude and expressing it.
Gratitude that remains in our hearts may be sincere, but the other person cannot experience what we never communicate.
Sometimes saying “thank you” in the moment is enough.
But sometimes gratitude deserves more.
A pause.
A few thoughtful words.
A card.
A pen.
And a few minutes to tell someone not only what they did, but what it meant to you.
That is one of the reasons I believe so deeply in handwritten thank-you notes.
